Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
- Define the internet and state how it is different from the web.
- List the services available on the internet.
- Open a browser and find information on a given topic.
- State basic rules for safe and correct use of the internet.
What the Internet Is
The internet is a global network of computers joined together. When many computers are connected so that they can share information, they form a network. When networks all over the world are joined, the result is the internet.
The internet is not the same as the World Wide Web. The internet is the network itself, carrying information from one computer to another. The World Wide Web is one service that runs on the internet, providing pages that are viewed in a browser. Email, file transfer and instant messaging are other services.
Website means a set of related pages on the internet.
Uses of the Internet
The internet is used for communication through email, chat and video calls. It is used for research and education through online libraries, encyclopaedias and learning platforms. It is used for business through online shops, banking and advertising.
It is used for entertainment through music, films and games. It is used for news and current affairs, for government services such as JAMB and NECO, and for health information. It also supports remote work, where an employee uses a computer at home to serve an employer.
Getting on the Internet
To use the internet a device must be connected. At home this is usually through a router supplied by an internet service provider. In school a wired network connects many computers. A phone connects wirelessly. The connection may be called Wi-Fi, broadband or mobile data.
A browser is the program used to view web pages. Common browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge. To find information, a learner types key words into a search engine such as Google or Bing.
Safe and Responsible Use
The internet is useful but it must be used correctly. Do not share your full name, address, school name or phone number with strangers. Do not accept friend requests from people you have not met. Tell a parent or teacher if anything online makes you uncomfortable.
Information found online is not always true. Check who wrote it, when it was written and whether other sources agree before using it in an assignment. Spend reasonable time online and keep a balance with study, rest and exercise.
| Internet service | Use |

| Streaming | Watching films and listening to music |
| File transfer | Sending and receiving documents |
