Week 2 / Third Term
Introduction to Web Browsers
Lesson notes
Lesson objectives
By the end of the week, learners should be able to:
- Open a web browser and locate the address bar, back button and refresh.
- Navigate forward and backward between pages using the controls.
- Reload a page and use tabs to manage multiple pages.
- Read a URL to identify the host organisation.
- Name three reasons a school restricts browser access during class.
Key vocabulary
- Browser: software used to view web pages such as Chrome or Firefox.
- Address bar: the box where the page URL is typed.
- Back button: returns to the previous page.
- Refresh: reloads the current page.
- Tab: an open page running inside a single window.
- URL: the full web address of a page.
- Host: the organisation owning the domain name.
- Restriction: a rule limiting access for safety or focus.
Common misconceptions
- "All browsers show the same pages." Different browsers render pages slightly differently but show the same content.
- "Closing a tab deletes the page." Closing a tab just hides it; reopening restores it.
- "Restrictions mean no internet at all." Restrictions limit categories of sites during class.
Teacher activities
- Starter: hold up two browsers side by side and ask which shows the back button more clearly.
- Open a browser and point out the address bar, back, forward, refresh and tab controls.
- Demonstrate navigating forward and backward and opening two tabs.
- Read a URL aloud and identify the host organisation from the domain.
- Explain three school restrictions and tie each to a safety or focus concern.
- Close with the navigation task and exit question about tab management.
Student activities
- Observe the two browsers and name the back button on both.
- Open a browser and locate the address bar, back button and refresh.
- Navigate forward and backward between two pages.
- Open two tabs, refresh each and confirm the reload happened.
- Read a URL aloud and state the host organisation.
- Name three school restrictions and explain each with a reason.
- Answer the exit question in one sentence about tab management.
Practical / learning evidence
A one-page browser control checklist and a URL read-out task where learners state the host for three URLs. Submit both for marking.
Resources and preparation
Computers with a browser, sample URLs and blank checklists. Offline route: printed checklists, no device needed. Disable Caps Lock before drills. Ensure every learner has a working browser and network access.
Assessment for learning
Inspect the checklist for all required controls named correctly. Mark the URL read-outs for correct host identification. Check the restriction explanations for safety reasons. Flag any learner who thinks closing a tab deletes the page.
Inclusion and homework
Provide the checklist prefilled with labels for learners who need scaffolding and allow oral completion. Extend confident learners with four restrictions and a fifth navigation skill. Homework: open your most-used browser and list three features you rely on daily.
