Week 8 / Third Term

SSCE Past Questions Practice

Teaching outline

Lesson objectives

By the end of the week, learners should be able to:

  1. Recall SSCE past-question style items without notes in ten minutes.
  2. Apply knowledge to unfamiliar past-question prompts.
  3. Mark their own answers against the provided model answers.
  4. Identify the three weakest prompt types by style.
  5. Revise each weak style with a worked example.

Key vocabulary

  • Past question: a question taken directly from a previous examination.
  • Style: the format of a question such as objective or essay.
  • Prompt: the question stem requiring a written response.
  • Model answer: the published expected response for a past question.
  • Objective prompt: a multi-choice question demanding a chosen option.
  • Essay prompt: a question demanding a structured written response.
  • Weak style: a question format students struggle with most.

Common misconceptions

  • "Past questions repeat exact wording." Past questions use similar skills but different phrasing.
  • "Every prompt has the same expected depth." Prompts demand varying depth from definition to comparison.
  • "Revising past questions means rereading notes again." Revising past questions means applying knowledge under exam conditions.

Teacher activities

  1. Starter: display three past-question styles and ask which students find hardest.
  2. Share the recalled styles and highlight the three weakest prompt types.
  3. Walk through one objective prompt and one essay prompt with model answers.
  4. Run a timed recall quiz using past-question style prompts.
  5. Assign targeted revision per each weak style.
  6. Close with the style-comparison task and exit question.

Student activities

  1. Choose the hardest-style starter and explain the reason.
  2. Recall the past-question styles and name the three weakest prompt types.
  3. Work through one objective prompt and one essay prompt with model answers.
  4. Take the timed recall quiz using past-question style prompts.
  5. Revise each weak style with a worked example of your own.
  6. Answer the exit question in one sentence about prompt depth.

Practical / learning evidence

A scored timed recall quiz, a worked objective prompt response and a worked essay prompt response. Submit all three for marking.

Resources and preparation

Sample past-question sheets, blank prompts and model answer keys. Offline route: paper versions, no device needed. Display examples carefully and avoid exposing any proprietary past-question material beyond the public style shown.

Assessment for learning

Mark the timed quiz for honest timing. Inspect the objective prompt for correct option choice. Check the essay response for a structured definition, comparison or application. Flag any learner who treats past questions as exact repeats of notes.

Inclusion and homework

Provide the past-question sample prefilled for the prompt stem and allow oral response completion. Allow extra time on the timed quiz. Extend confident learners with four more prompts and a sixth homework writing two past-question style responses. Homework: answer one past-question style prompt from a remembered year without looking at notes.
