Operating Systems

Curriculum outline
Lesson objectives
By the end of the week, learners should be able to:
- State five operating-system functions in order.
- Explain why an operating system exists at all.
- Name the managers each OS function performs.
- Distinguish user accounts from shared drives.
- Apply one OS function to a given scenario.
Key vocabulary
- Operating system: software managing hardware, files, memory and users.
- Manager: the component handling a system resource.
- File manager: handles creation, naming and deletion of files.
- User account: a profile identifying one authorised user.
- Shared drive: a storage area accessible to multiple users.
- Program manager: runs and schedules installed programmes.
- Resource manager: allocates processor time and memory.
- Security manager: enforces access rules and passwords.
Common misconceptions
- "The OS does nothing except run programs." The OS manages everything from power to passwords.
- "User accounts are the same as folders." Accounts protect resources; folders organise data.
- "An OS controls every device on the network." An OS controls the computer and its attached peripherals.
Teacher activities
- Starter: display a locked folder and an unlocked folder and ask which the OS would make active.
- List five OS functions step by step, linking each to its manager component.
- Explain why an OS exists by contrasting bare hardware with managed hardware.
- Compare user accounts with shared drives in a classroom lab setting.
- Demonstrate one OS function on a live system and explain it.
- Close with the functional-order task and exit question about managers.
Student activities
- Identify which starter folder the OS would make active and explain why.
- State the five OS functions in order, naming each manager.
- Explain why an operating system exists, avoiding bare-hardware arguments.
- Compare user accounts and shared drives for file sharing.
- Apply one OS function to a given classroom scenario.
- Answer the exit question in one sentence about managers.
Practical / learning evidence
A five-function checklist with each function paired to its manager, a one-paragraph OS existence explanation and a classroom-scenario task. Hand in all three for marking.
Resources and preparation
Computers with an OS interface, printed checklist and a classroom scenario card. Offline route: paper checklist and scenarios. Verify the computers start reliably and do not prompt repeatedly.
Assessment for learning
Inspect the checklist for five correct functions with matching managers. Check the explanation for a sensible existence reason. Mark the scenario task for applying the correct OS function. Flag any learner who lists only program management.
Inclusion and homework
Provide the checklist prefilled for learners who need scaffolding and allow oral completion. Extend confident learners with seven functions and a seventh manager category. Homework: name one difference between a user account and a shared drive.
