Curriculum outline
Lesson objectives
By the end of the week, learners should be able to:
- Name at least three advanced productivity tools such as LaTeX or Markdown.
- Explain why Markdown is preferred for technical documentation.
- Apply bold, italic, strikethrough and blockquote formatting.
- Produce a formatted document with headings, lists and tables.
- Export the document as PDF for distribution.
Key vocabulary
- Productivity tool: software helping users create professional documents.
- LaTeX: a typesetting system for mathematical notation.
- Markdown: a lightweight formatting syntax for plain text.
- Formatting: changing how text looks such as size, colour and spacing.
- Strikethrough: a line through selected text indicating deletion.
- Blockquote: a quoted passage set apart from surrounding text.
- Heading: a title used for sections and hierarchy.
- List: a bulleted or numbered series of items.
- Table: a grid aligning rows and columns of data.
- Export: saving a copy in another format.
Common misconceptions
- "Word processors are the only tools for documents." Markdown and LaTeX suit different workflows than Word.
- "Markdown changes the document itself." Markdown is plain text with formatting markers; no hidden style layers.
- "Bold and italic are the same." Bold and italic change weight and slant respectively.
Teacher activities
- Starter: display plain text and formatted text and ask which a technical team prefers.
- Name three advanced productivity tools and describe each workflow.
- Demonstrate Markdown formatting: heading, bold, italic, strikethrough, blockquote.
- Show producing a formatted document with headings, lists and a table.
- Demonstrate exporting the Markdown to PDF via a converter.
- Close with the formatting task and exit question.
Student activities
- Choose the starter item and explain the preference reason.
- Name three advanced productivity tools and describe each workflow.
- Apply Markdown formatting to the heading, bold, italic, strikethrough and blockquote.
- Produce a formatted document with headings, lists and a table.
- Export the Markdown to PDF and confirm the conversion worked.
- Answer the exit question in one sentence about Markdown.
Practical / learning evidence
A formatted Markdown document containing heading, bold, italic, strikethrough, blockquote, a list and a table, plus a converted PDF. Inspect both for matching content.
Resources and preparation
Computers with a Markdown editor and PDF converter, blank templates and sample text. Offline route: paper Markdown preview, no device needed. Warn learners not to enter personal data visible in Markdown preview.
Assessment for learning
Inspect the Markdown for correct syntax on every element. Check the PDF for matching content. Ask a learner to describe the difference between bold and italic. Flag any learner who claims Markdown hides formatting layers.
Inclusion and homework
Provide the sample text already typed so learners focus on formatting syntax. Allow extra time for the PDF conversion. Extend confident learners with four more elements and a second conversion. Homework: convert one plain-text document to Markdown and back again.
