Lesson objectives
By the end of the term, learners should be able to:
- Insert a heading with centred alignment and size above the body text.
- Apply paragraph spacing and line spacing consistently across a document.
- Use bullet points and numbered lists for separate ideas.
- Set margins and check page layout orientation.
- Create a basic style template from a heading and body paragraph.
- Save a formatted document with a clear filename.
Key vocabulary
- Heading: a title inserted above a paragraph block.
- Paragraph spacing: vertical space added between paragraph blocks.
- Line spacing: vertical distance between lines within a paragraph.
- Bullet: a round marker that starts a new list item.
- Numbered list: a sequence where each item begins with a number.
- Margin: the blank edge area around the printable page.
- Orientation: landscape or portrait page direction.
- Style: a reusable set of formatting applied to repeated elements.
Common misconceptions
- "One spacing setting suits every document." Headings and body text use different spacing, usually larger headings and tighter body.
- "Bullet points force readers to read fast." Bullets organise long lists and improve scanability.
- "Margin settings disappear after saving." Margins persist once saved as the document default.
Teacher activities
- Starter: display three versions of the same paragraph with different spacing; ask which reads best and why.
- Demonstrate inserting a heading centred, applying 1.5 line spacing and adding space after paragraphs.
- Show bullet and numbered lists, then prompt learners to convert one plain list into each.
- Introduce margins and orientation, opening Page Layout to preview changes.
- Open the Styles pane and build a Heading 1 and Normal style from scratch.
- Run the form-building task and finish with a save routine demonstration.
Student activities
- Pick the best-looking version from the starter display and explain the reason.
- Insert a heading and apply 1.5 line spacing and space after paragraphs.
- Convert one plain paragraph list into bullets and one into a numbered list.
- Adjust margins and change orientation, then reopen the document to confirm.
- Create a Heading 1 style and apply it twice; save the document.
- Complete the form template and save the finished file with a clear filename.
Practical / learning evidence
A formatted document containing a centered styled heading, at least three body paragraphs with consistent spacing, one bulleted list and one numbered list, defined margins, saved under a clear filename. Inspect the reopened file.
Resources and preparation
Computers with Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer, a printed template for formatting practice, a blank page layout preview sheet and a sample paragraph for list conversion. Disable Caps Lock before drills.
Assessment for learning
Inspect the reopened file for consistent heading style, spacing, list types and margin settings. Ask two learners to run the save routine without prompts. Watch for inconsistent spacing inside and outside paragraphs and mark accordingly.
Inclusion and homework
Give the starter paragraph versions in larger print and allow a partner to read steps aloud. Provide a prebuilt template for formatting only so learners focus on spacing rather than composition. Extend confident learners with tab stops and borders around the heading.
